Two Northumberland Beauties

In October I wrote about being in Yorkshire. In that same North of England trip I also caught up with two rather talented women who run businesses closer to home.

Northumberland is a county of contrasts - city life, beaches and castles, fishing communities, the largest reservoir and man made forest in England, high hills and empty moorlands. It borders Scotland and as the crow flies is only three miles from my village!

woven blankets

I had the opportunity to revisit Fine Fettle Fibres.

It's difficult to overestimate what a marvellous shop this is! Judith is an independent yarn retailer focused on wools from the British Isles.

J & S yarns

Here you will find familiar names but also skeins from small scale yarn producers, dyers and spinners, some unique to FFF.

Clarty Clogs yarn skeins

Patterns, needles, notions, workshops, a regular knit group and more - you could spend hours in Judith's treasure trove!

Fine Fettle Fibres

Fine Fettle Fibres is on the main street of the pretty village of Felton which sits on the River Coquet. Make a day of it by enjoying a walk after yarn therapy then lunch at The Running Fox bakery/cafe by the bridge.

angora goats

Further north is Whistlebare Farm. A fibre lover's dream, this is where Alice nurtures her Angora goats and Wensleydale sheep. Their fibres are spun in Yorkshire then dyed on the farm into an impressive range of shades. Unique patterns are commissioned for these yarns, with samples on display in the studio.

Alice and customers and cake

This building is everything you could hope for - soft sofas, a wood-burning stove, coffee and home made cake, yarn, more yarn, exclusive finished goods and carefully considered giftware. You can meet the goats and sheep, and the heavy horses used on the farm. I have known Alice for quite a few years but this was my first visit to the studio. It was a real pleasure to hear her talk about the careful husbandry of her beloved animals.

Look at those joyful woven Whistlebare blankets in the top image too!

Those look like fun, especially the cake part!

🌷Too chilly on this morning’s walk to remove my gloves to take pics, so here’s last night’s candlelit still life.
It was all going so well until I realised what the odd smell was - singed tulip….🔥🙄…
🪡🪡🪡
A wise friend once said that it takes longer to not do a job than to do it.
Case in point: these little stitched pincushions have been hanging around - under wraps but still in the way - waiting to be united with their indigo dyed egg cup bases - for at least six months.
Today was the day.
A major achievement for Tartkind🤗
🌞
A bracing (ok, very chilly) walk with man and dog on this bright second morning of a brand new year
A very few flakes of snow and a pale rainbow
All is well in my wee corner of this troubled world

Never met a stripe I didn’t like…
Ok, that’s not entirely true but I’m very happily knitting them in grey and charcoal this holiday time🤗
🐾🌷
Enjoying a gentle afternoon in front of the fire with a book in my hand and a dog at my feet.
This is what I have been waiting for….🙏🏻
Also loving the architectural elegance of my gift-to-self £5 bunch of Lidl tulips on the windowsill.
✨✨✨✨✨
Sending you comfort and joy from our tiny corner of the world ❤️🐾
Happy post day!
My new @thosejoestoes slippers kit in jolly festive red has just arrived
Not too taxing - may be able to stitch them and drink a cheeky port at the same time…what could possibly go wrong?🤔
🌞🐾
A gentle morning walk with Bruce as the sun rose on the second shortest day of the year. Blissful!
