Blissful Blues

I'm encouraging you to share the calm and beauty of natural indigo today, with a collection ranging from traditional boro to contemporary weave and block print.

If you are on IG do seek out some of these feeds for a blue fix (the first link for each maker will take you to their Instagram feed). And if that particular social medium is not for you, I have linked to websites where possible.

I've started with an amazing new rug by Sufiyan Khatri in Kutch, Gujarat. Contemporary and striking.

Sri is a gallery in Brooklyn full of antique Japanese and Indian textiles. Their IG feed is a rich source of beauty, boro-style and otherwise.

BleuAnglais is Noel Chapman's constantly evolving selection of covetable antique and vintage indigo textiles, often from China. He sells at many fairs which are, perhaps fortunately, too far south in the UK for me to get to...

Vintage Chinese cushion and cloth

Lori Seidemann is a Chicago-based weaver and plant dyer. Her posts are full of soft subtle dyed shades, including indigos, in yarn skeins and also woven into graded block patterns. Her website is here, with plant dye journal close-ups and a glorious gallery of past projects.

Yuya Kobayashi founded Rifatto Handmade - he deconstructs old clothes to make unique handstitched pieces. Not just jackets and not just indigo - his feed is full of wild inspiration!

Morriseyfabric - Chinese, Guatamalan, African and more - ethically sourced vintage textiles in this Californian online shop. Another treat for the eyes with blues of all hues to lose yourself in. Website here

I have a soft spot for Vintagecustoman where Mitsugu Sasaki hand-patches old clothes and breathes new life into utlitarian clothes. He has a shop full of such pieces.

Borro_co is all sashiko mending and embellishment. As they say - Repair Don't Replace

There are, of course, lots more talented contemporary dyers, weavers, stitchers, many much closer to my home than these. I'll gather some of them into a post another day. Meanwhile do browse a couple of these sites and soak up those shades.

What treasures! A few I knew about, most not, so I’m looking forward to lots of happy browsing. Thanks!

I donated my dyes and dye pots to @atbirkhillhousefibre this morning.
They will be well used and appreciated by this organisation that does so much good in the Scottish Borders.

At Birkhill CIC is an animal assisted therapy and crafting centre, offering mental health support in several hands-on ways. Whether it’s caring for the alpacas and 🐑Castlemilk Moorit flock, tending the dye garden, sorting fibre or crafting items for the on-site shop, there are many volunteering possibilities here as well as classes and workshops open to everyone.

I’ve run a few classes here in the past and felt thoroughly inspired by my brief visit today. Perhaps next year when I have a better balanced work life I can attend some workshops myself🤗

I cast on a basic raglan sweater with lots of subtle colour changes to keep me interested. This will just be a whenever project - a few rows now and again and no hurry. I am using the Latvian yarn I bought from @balticknitsscotland held with an anonymous bargain black 4ply bought from @kingcraig_fabrics in Dornoch.

🪬I love making and packaging and finding quirky fabrics to incorporate in my kits. I’ve never lost my childhood delight in playing with scraps of paper and pencils, yarn and fabric.
BUT
I have a more recent love too, planning and leading textile tours in the UK and beyond. Whole new vistas have opened up for me and I don’t want to miss a thing!
SO
The Tart shop will close late summer. In the meantime I have new makes and interesting bundles to add to the shelves. Newsletter subscribers always know about these first and often snap up my limited edition goods before I have time to tell anyone else.
PLEASE
Sign up so you don’t miss out! There are bargains to be had from now until late summer.
THEN
I hope to have some time to be creative in other ways for quite a while.
❤️🧶🤗
I needed a very simple project yesterday. Picked some red mix random 4ply leftovers, held them double and cast on the simplest of hats. Just love how it’s turning out!
